Property experts put unclaimed cash to a good cause

A local firm of leading property specialists has taken advantage of a little-known rule to donate unclaimed money to a well-deserving charity.

Shropshire-based Nock Deighton has contributed more than £7,000 to support the ongoing work of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, the UK's only charity solely dedicated to tackling blood cancers.

As a company fully-regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Nock Deighton is able to pass on any client funds unclaimed after a number of years to a charitable cause of its choice, on the proviso that the charity undertakes to repay the amount in the unlikely event that the client makes a future claim for the money.

"Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research relies entirely on voluntary donations and doesn't receive any government funding," Graham Taylor, Finance Director for Nock Deighton, said. "It is extremely forward-thinking of the charity to embrace this sort of fundraising initiative, and we as a company are delighted that money which would otherwise be left sitting around in a bank account is now able to support such a fantastic cause and help fund the charity's vital work."

Phil Hodgett, Finance Director for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, revealed: "This is an extremely simple way for companies to support charities and an easy way for charities to receive much-needed donations from money that is otherwise not being used.

"If the situation arises and there is a need to make repayment, we can arrange this, but the likelihood is very slim and the positive benefits of such a donation remain very high."

Graham Taylor added: "We've used the same principle in the past to fund Macmillan Cancer Support, and I'm sure we'll continue to take advantage of these rules to donate to other fantastic causes in the years to come. I'd encourage other RICS-regulated estate agents, and for that matter other professional services that operate a similar scheme, to get involved and help put unclaimed client money to good use."

Formed in 1831, Nock Deighton is one of the Midlands' most well-established and respected firms of estate agents, lettings agents, chartered surveyors, block management agents, and auctioneers. The company stands at the forefront of the modern property sector by embracing up-to-the-minute technology and industry best practice, and has a firm focus on achieving the very best results through a full range of specialist property-related services and dedicated staff.
