Dateline: Hangzhou is a brand new exhibition of work produced by
journalism and media students from Coventry University during their
2011 exchange trip to Hangzhou, in Zhejiang Province,
China.
The exhibition is located in the Ellen Terry student lounge,
Ellen Terry Building, and features work from a variety of
media.
Coventry School of Art and Design's cultural exchange programme
with Zhejiang University of Media and Communications (ZUMC) is now
in its seventh year and in April, twenty-five students and four
teachers spent two weeks in Hangzhou taking part in a cooperative
learning experience with their Chinese counterparts.
Andrew Noakes, Senior Lecturer in Automotive Journalism was one
of the tutors on the exchange visit.
He said:
"Over the two week period, our team worked closely with the
Chinese students to produce work using a variety of media. We
produced a bi-lingual daily newspaper which detailed the
experiences of students from both universities as well as short,
cultural films. A majority of what we worked on in China will
feature in the exhibition."
ZUMC is a leading institution in China for journalism and media
education with over 700 staff teaching 9,000 students from all over
China. The campus is extremely well-equipped for the needs of
modern media training.
Andrew Noakes added:
"The main facility on campus is an impressive 22-storey 'TV
Tower' which houses 17 broadcast studios, which not only provides a
base for broadcast teaching but also serves the local area with
television output. It was fascinating to watch both sets of
students coming together to work on projects that benefit both
institutions."
As well as working on daily newspapers and short films, the
students were given a taste of Chinese life and culture in the form
of field trips. A visit to a Buddhist temple and an historic town
gave the students a taste of ancient China while trips to the
financial heart of the province and reporting on the Grand Prix and
Shanghai Auto Show reflected modern China.
The exhibition is free of charge and runs until 30
September.
