A Leicestershire couple have opened a natural burial ground in
South Croxton with support of a £90,000 business loan from
Lloyds TSB Commercial.
The Willows Natural Burial Ground is set in nearly six acres of
Charnwood countryside overlooking two ponds, and includes
wildflower meadows and woodlands in which burials and the
scattering of ashes can take place.
As a natural burial ground, only bio-degradable, non-toxic
coffins and ashes caskets are used. Possessions and clothing must
also be made from natural materials. The ecolife of the area is
paramount and all naturally germinated seedlings from native
British wildflowers are left to flourish.
Conservation of the countryside is at the heart of the site,
which opened for business this month. The natural woodlands and
meadows are designed to be a haven for wildlife, and native British
trees can be selected and planted to remember loved ones.
A long way from their day jobs as a project manager and senior
teaching assistant, Chris and Jenny Scroby bought the land from the
previous owner after hearing that it was going to be sold on eBay.
They approached Lloyds TSB Commercial to secure the funding and
guidance they required to purchase the land and get the business up
and running.
The owners are holding an open weekend on Saturday 4th and
Sunday 5th June to allow the local community to experience the
peaceful, eco-friendly new surroundings.
Chris Scroby, director at The Willows Natural Burial Ground,
said: "I have always wanted to own woodland. To be able to combine
this ambition with a change in career, whilst also giving something
back to the community and the environment, is my dream.
"Lloyds TSB Commercial has been supportive throughout the
process, from initially purchasing the business at the end of last
year, to our grand opening this month. The funds they have provided
have given us the chance to fulfil a lifelong goal and also build a
family business that we hope to pass on to our children.
"We want to use locally sourced trades and suppliers wherever
possible - our gravedigger is from the next village. As a start-up
ourselves, we understand the importance of supporting local
businesses. We hope that The Willows will become a place that
everyone will come to and remember their loved ones in peaceful,
natural surroundings."
David Guest, relationship manager for Lloyds TSB Commercial,
said: "A career change as dramatic as this can be a daunting step,
but with the correct advice and support it's possible to succeed as
Chris and Jenny have.
"The couple are providing a fantastic facility for the area that
will not only hopefully secure their family's future financially,
but will benefit the local environment.
"As part of our SME Charter, Lloyds TSB Commercial is committed
to help 300,000 new start-ups across the country by 2012, and The
Willows Natural Burial Ground is a great example of a business that
can benefit from this."
