Environmentally aware Birmingham teenagers can now take an innovative course in green living thanks to social enterprise and training provider Enta.

The Sustainability course was developed by Enta and is thought to be a city first, reflecting the increasing importance of environmental issues in today's society.

The BTEC Level 1 programme focuses on topics such as climate change, carbon footprints and practical information on what impact learners and their families can have on the environment.

Nicola Quigley, Enta's Training Manager, explained: "The course was developed to engage young people in environmental issues and learners can find out more at a string of open days, held every Wednesday in June at Enta's Mill Wharf training centre.

"Our learners also benefit from a £20 a week training allowance, travel expenses and a free breakfast because it's vital to us, as a social enterprise, that our training is as accessible as possible to all teenagers."

Enta provides training courses, advice, guidance and career support to help more than 2,000 young people into employment every year.

In addition to the Sustainability programme, 16 to 18-year-old trainees can find out more about Enta's full range of Foundation Learning courses at the Open Days.

The next Open Evening is held between 3pm and 7pm on Wednesday 15th June at Enta's Mill Wharf offices. Similar events are also being held between 10am and 3pm on Wednesday 22 June and Wednesday 29 June.

Nicola Quigley, Enta's Training Manager, said: "We offer a broad range of courses which are growing all the time, as shown by the new Sustainability programme. We expect it to be really popular and, as it's filled on a first-come first-served basis, I'd urge anyone interested to come along this Wednesday.

"Those without a clear idea of what they'd like to do can try a combination of free Foundation Learning courses, from Childcare and Construction to Horticulture and Computer Repair and Maintenance."

As well as being a training provider, Enta also runs Little Mill Nursery and Top Lock Cafe, at Mill Wharf, and Lakeside Family and Children's Centre, in Wyrley Birch. In addition, it offers conference and catering facilities - including a halal kitchen - as well as a landscaping and construction service.
