Businesses in Derby have united to form their own recognition
initiative for Vernon Gate, Derby's Georgian Business
District.
After the recent decline in the economy and the movement of many
businesses to newer developments, such as Pride Park, the area has
seen a dramatic fall in interest from businesses. At a recent
Vernon Gate Management meeting it was decided that the area needed
a promotional boost, and resident businesses set about creating
what is now 'Vernon Gate - Derby's Georgian Business District.'
"Vernon Gate provides the perfect city centre location for any
business, it was clear that we needed to promote this unique
historical conservation area and generate awareness of the broad
mix of businesses located here" commented Peter Milner, Vernon Gate
Management.
"Not only are we aiming to promote Derby's Georgian Business
District so that we can attract new businesses to the area, but the
initiative also exists to encourage local businesses to work
together collaboratively, maximising local opportunities where ever
possible" added Leah Marley, InsideOut Creative.
The Vernon Gate initiative is communicated through its regal
brand, which is now the core visual identity for Vernon Gate and
accurately reflects the prestige and beauty of the Friar Gate
Conservation area.
A key marketing tool for the initiative is the Vernon Gate
website, which serves as an educational hub for information on
Vernon Gate and it's surrounding area. The secondary focus of the
website is to promote its business community, educating surrounding
companies on the services and products available to them on their
doorstep, encouraging partnerships, sharing of knowledge and
generating a warm business community. Additionally included is a
property's for sale/let section to help attract inward investment
to the Vernon Gate area, reducing the number of vacant buildings in
a hope to restore and drive business in this quarter and the wider
city.
"After 5 years on Vernon Gate we are delighted to be involved in
such a positive project" commented Dave Bayliss of Bayliss
Consulting. "The website is very effective for those businesses
already operating out of Vernon Gate and for anyone looking for
services or re-locating to the area" he went on to say.
The strategy doesn't stop there, the initiative has recognised a
number of objectives including satisfying the needs of tourists who
visit the area because of its fascinating history. "We recognised
that many of the people visiting our site would often be tourists.
It isn't rare to see people taking photographs of the
façade, Vernon Gate is a location on the famous Derby Ghost
walk too, so we're working on signage which will illustrate the
history of the area" said Peter.
The first success of the initiative was ironically formed
through its creation. Mono Design and InsideOut Creative, both
creative and design consultancies, worked closely together on the
initiatives marketing, combining talent from two industry experts
to form the Vernon Gate brand, proposition and its website -
vernongatederby.co.uk.
Since its inception the Vernon Gate initiative has welcomed
interest from a variety of businesses on Vernon Street, instantly
expanding the initiative. "Welcoming 3 businesses from Vernon
Street was a clear indicator of the initiatives first steps of
success" said Peter. "We are delighted by the positive interest
from the local business community" added Leah.
Marketing Derby have shown a clear interest in the project, as
Vernon Gate aligns 'Derby's Georgian Business District' with other
area initiatives like the Cathedral Quarter and The Lanes. Vernon
Gate hopes in being proactive they will have secured their place in
the Marketing Derby offer.
"I think it's fantastic that businesses are working together to
develop a strong identity for this area which has always been a
vibrant business district in the city." John Forkin, Managing
Director, Marketing Derby.
