Golfers came from as far as London and Oxford to support a
charity golf day near Solihull that raised more than £5,000
for disabled and disadvantaged children.
The event, organised jointly by Wooden Spoon, the charity of
British rugby, and employment experts Pertemps People Development
Group, saw 70 players compete for honours at Ladbrook Park Golf
Club, near Tanworth-in-Arden, Warwickshire.
Local businesses taking part included TNT, PWC, and Barques PR.
A team from Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG) ran out
winners. Spoon honorary president and former Coventry and England
winger David Duckham was on hand to present the prizes.
Spoon West Midlands regional chairman Phil Pemble declared the
day a "tremendous success" and said that the ultimate winners would
be the children who will benefit.
A team of trustees and friends of Birmingham Focus 'played the
most golf' on the day, securing the coveted wooden spoon prize of
colourful jackets in the charity's colours.
Phil said: "A huge thanks must go to all the companies who
supported us on the day. The region is committed to raising funds
to enable Birmingham Focus to provide enhanced facilities for 15
school leavers in the autumn. Spoon will be donating £20,000
with a further £10,000 anticipated from a team of cyclists
including BBC WM's Phil Upton who have recently undertaken a
challenge taking in part of the Tour De France route over the
Alps."
Birmingham Focus CEO Ian Laing said: "A huge thanks to everyone
who took part and to Wooden Spoon for their organisation, it was a
terrific event. The support of fund raisers like the two Phils
makes the difference in turning our hopes and dreams into
reality."
