Companies from across the region have teamed up to tackle a
disease which affects thousands of people by holding a charity
football tournament.
The sixth annual Meggitt Dunlop Championship reached its
conclusion at the Alan Higgs Centre in Allard Way as Coventry
Sports Foundation made home advantage count after defeating Jaguar
Land Rover 3-1 in an exciting final.
The tournament was organised by Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems
who choose to donate proceeds to a different charity each year.
This year, eight teams took part and raised over £1,000 for
the Alzheimer's Society.
Earlier Barclays had secured third place after beating Inter
Jaguar Land Rover 7-4, while Rolls Royce, NP Aerospace, Meggitt
Aircraft Braking Systems and the Agriculture and Horticulture
Development Board were all knocked out at earlier stages.
Madhan Jassal from Meggitt has organised the tournament since it
began in 2006 and even took the step of refereeing every match this
time around.
"The tournament began as an internal competition for the company
but over the years it has grown to include all sorts of
organisations from across the region," he said.
"Coventry Sports Foundation and all the staff at the Alan Higgs
Centre welcomed us with open arms and have been really helpful with
the behind the scenes work, preparing the pitches and so on.
"The tournament is a fantastic way of meeting people we would
not otherwise have come across, and developing friendships while
raising money for worthy causes.
"We are delighted with the amount raised this year and we are
looking to expand the tournament further in the future."
The tournament was concluded with an awards ceremony and the
presentation of a cheque to the Alzheimer's Society at the Coventry
Sports Foundation-managed Alan Higgs Centre.
Graeme Truswell, centre manager at the Alan Higgs Centre, said:
"We were delighted to offer our support by both taking part in the
tournament as well as hosting it.
"The fact Coventry Sports Foundation not only reached the final
but won was an added bonus.
"Coventry Sports Foundation has supported a large number of
charities over the years and has extensive experience in hosting
events such as this so we were more than happy to offer our
facilities to the tournament's organisers."
A follow-up five-a-side tournament is planned later this
summer.
New entries are welcomed for the 2012 tournament. For more
