Health & safety specialists C&G Safety of Stonehouse,
Gloucestershire, has won a contract to carry out safety auditing
for the Athlete's Village now taking shape near London in
preparation for next year's Olympic Games.
C&G's safety experts are visiting the 30-acre site every
fortnight for the next year to ensure safety procedures are being
followed so that the 12,000-plus people employed working on the
site are kept safe.
Potential risks to be monitored include electricity networks,
lift shafts, potentially harmful gases and chemicals, noise, and
hazards which could cause 'slips and trips'. The safety consultants
will spend a day on the site every fortnight, checking procedures,
looking for hazards and making sure contractors are operating in
accordance with safety regulations.
"The athlete's village site has all the risks that can be
present on any construction site" said Roger Hart of C&G
Safety. "We'll be giving health & safety advice to the
contractors according to what we find.
"The site has an accident incidence of less than a third of the
national average and it feels great to be contributing towards
that. It's probably the only Olympic site ever built which has had
no recorded fatalities."
The village will provide accommodation for more than 17,000
athletes during the Games next year. Once the event is over the
development will leave the area with some 2800 new homes, including
many low-cost properties, complete with a full range of community
and social facilities.
