A DIY SOS style makeover has transformed a whg community room in
Walsall to bring it back into use.
The venue, part of Leyland Croft residential block in Pelsall,
is barely recognisable after the project which has seen new carpets
laid, the room redecorated and a new boiler and kitchen installed.
New chairs and tables and external paintwork complete the
makeover.
whg, one of the Midlands' leading housing providers, will
celebrate the official unveiling of the room on Friday, 24th June
by Mayor Garry Perry with invited guests.
Hayley Scott-Priest, a member of whg's Aldridge & Brownhills
Estate Management Team, has overseen the project. She said:
"The room wasn't being used at all and that was such a waste so,
working with others, we have put that right.
"The room is now amazing - a great facility for the village -
and we hope it becomes a hive of activity."
Wates, whg's major works contractor, offered to donate and fit a
kitchen and boiler as part of its annual Community Benefit Day.
Steve Dugmore, Wates' project manager, said: "The kitchen was
old fashioned and in a poor condition. The new one is the latest
model and very good quality. We're very happy to be involved as the
difference we have made to the room is massive."
Wates will be back on site next week to create nine parking bays
for Leyland Croft.
There are already groups keen to make use of the revamped room,
including Pelsall Children's Centre and the local branch of Walsall
Area Partnership.
The children's centre, which donated £2,000 to cover the
cost of new carpets and redecoration, was looking for a temporary
home until it moves into the proposed village community building in
High Street, set to house a library, health centre and the
children's centre.
In the meantime it will hold social activities for families at
the whg venue, off Trevor Road, and provide support and advice to
parents.
Centre manager Dawn Munday said: "This is a great community room
and we want it to be for the community and well-used by them. Such
a massive improvement has been made, it really is fab!"
