A leading housing and care organisation has struck gold after achieving top marks for its health and safety procedures at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011.

Midland Heart, which owns more than 32,000 properties throughout the Midlands, was awarded gold for its health and safety management system and its continuing development over the past two years.

It is the first year the organisation has entered the awards, which looks at the entrants' overarching health and safety systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

David Rawlins, RoSPA's awards manager, said: "RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition.

"Midland Heart has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award."

RoSPA launched its programme 55 years ago and the majority of its awards are non-competitive, marking achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels.

Pete Jones, Midland Heart's health and safety manager, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive the award as recognition for all the hard work over the last couple of years by everyone involved.

"Our success reflects Midland Heart's commitment to protect the health and well-being of its employees, customers and others at the highest level."

This year's awards ceremony was held at Birmingham's Hilton Metropole near to the National Exhibition Centre, where competitive awards were also presented in more than 20 sectors, along with specialist awards recognising excellence in specific areas, such as the management of occupational road risk.

The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011 are sponsored by NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), the leading health and safety professional examining body.
