Developers say it's not just about the buildings when it comes
to creating the brand new Sports and Learning Community in
Madeley.
The Kier Moss team is currently building the new Abraham Darby
project which will also create a new leisure centre for school and
community use.
But senior project manager Jason Powell, said: "Although we're
concentrating on creating modern hi-tech educational and community
facilities on the site, we've also been working to support local
students with their studies in a wide range of subject areas."
Jason said the team had been working with students at the
existing Abraham Darby School, with many of the company's experts
sharing their knowledge in workshop sessions on site and at the
school itself.
"We've been particularly involved in the BTEC Construction
course, providing course materials and presentations, and our
architect is working with design students on directional signage
for the new school.
"We've also encouraged local suppliers to come into the school
and talk to business students about the way they run their
companies on a day-to-day basis."
Two of the Kier team members - graduate quantity surveyor
Charlotte Connor, and graduate engineer Carl Edwards - have also
been supporting careers day events at other local schools.
"It's not just about the practical side of the construction
industry either, as our site has itself proved to be a real
inspiration for the more creative side of school life too," said
Jason.
"Students from the Abraham Darby Camera Club have been using the
project as a topic for their photographs, and they've gathered an
incredible selection of images charting the progress of the
development so far.
"It's been excellent to see how the Abraham Darby Sports and
Learning Community project has led to so many varied
opportunities for local students, and we're looking forward to
continuing our partnership working as the scheme continues."
