Shropshire motorcyclists are being warned to take extra care
when carrying pillion passengers after a huge increase in injury
claims.
Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and
Shrewsbury, said the past five years had seen an alarming 57 per
cent increase in claims made against motorcyclists.
"The statistics show that the rise in claims may be a direct
result of more riders carrying pillion passengers.
"The rising cost of fuel and road congestion may well be
encouraging more people to travel by motorcycle rather than take
their car.
"And now the warmer weather is on the way, even more
motorcyclists will take to the roads with friends and family.
"The problems come when commuters who usually ride motorcycles
alone decide to travel with a passenger - this affects the way the
bike handles in terms of stopping distance, cornering and
steering.
"So if you're not completely confident carrying a passenger,
make sure you take expert training before you do."
Dave said there were other simple precautions to take which
could make all the difference.
"Your passenger will need a British Standards approved crash
helmet and should also be wearing the correct protective
clothing.
"Before you travel, make sure your bike is adjusted to
accommodate a passenger, by checking the suspension, and altering
tyre pressures and mirrors.
"The pillion passenger will need to take up the correct position
on the bike too, acting as a neutral load and not compromising your
balance.
"By preparing in advance, you can help to reduce the risks both
you and your passenger will face, and enjoy the roads safely."
