Shropshire gardeners must protect their green fingers from the
hidden dangers lurking in their borders, a local expert has
warned.
Matt Reeves leads the health and safety team at Henshalls
Insurance Brokers, in Newport and Shrewsbury, and said gardening
injuries always peaked at this time of year.
"With the weather warming up, and the plants starting to really
grow in earnest, everyone is keen to get out into the garden.
"But there are all kinds of dangers which you could be facing,
and it's vital that you take some simple garden safety precautions
before you start work."
Matt said given the current spate of rain showers, gardeners
must not use electrical extension leads when the weather or grass
was damp.
"Electrocution or electric shocks are a real risk, and you
should also use a residual current device when operating
electrically powered tools.
"Wear the right eye and ear protection and suitable protective
clothing, including rubber-soled shoes with closed toes when mowing
your lawn.
"Be extra cautious too with all electrical cutting and trimming
equipment - if you have to leave the tools unattended, even for
just a few minutes, make sure you unplug them.
"You should also ensure all small cutting tools and garden
chemicals are kept out of reach on the top shelves in the shed, and
only treat your plants with spray products on days when there is no
wind.
"These may sound like obvious precautions to take, but it just
takes one small slip-up to cause a serious injury.
"Don't take your safety, or the safety of your children and
pets, for granted - make sure you stay safe by following these
simple rules closely."
