The multi-national joint venture of two of the world's leading pharmacy and healthcare companies has chosen to manage its UK operation from Coventry.

American pharmaceutical company Medco - which ranks 35th on the Fortune 500 list - teamed up with German healthcare service provider Celesio to form a new pharmacy-driven organisation called Medco Celesio B.V. in June last year.

The firm aims to improve the quality of clinical care and reduce overall costs by analysing the effectiveness of current healthcare programmes, introducing personalised care services for patients whose medicine requires special handling and improving the overall efficiency of care delivery.

The headquarters of the joint venture is in Amsterdam and as the first step in its bid to establish itself in the UK, the firm selected the University of Warwick Science Park's Business Innovation Centre in Binley, as the hub for the operation.

Hiren Modi is the managing director of the UK arm of Medco Celesio B.V. and believes Binley is the perfect starting place for this ambitious organisation.

He said: "This joint venture launched last year with the focus to offer a range of services that will offer more efficient healthcare at lower costs.

"At the moment we are in the market research and product development phase in the UK with a view to offering our services to primary care organisations in the near future.

"Binley is a very good location for us. It is close to the resources available in existing Celesio companies and it is a fairly central location, close to Birmingham Airport which is good for us because we frequently have colleagues flying in and out from Europe and the United States.

"We currently have a small team in this office at any one time but we will be looking to expand the operation on all fronts towards the turn of the year."

The University of Warwick Science Park's Business Innovation Centre in Binley is home to a range of firms - from a specialist online recruitment company to high-tech automotive companies.

Centre manager Penny Robb is excited to see another growing organisation add its name to this diverse list.

Penny said: "It is fantastic to be able to welcome a firm such as Medco Celesio that is the result of a partnership between two major players in their industry.

"We have a great deal of experience working with multi-national firms and this as well as our location means we provide a great fit for such companies.

"It is great to see the arrival of an organisation that is already looking forward to expansion and another strength of this centre is that we are in a position to support such growth, which will prove to be another successful partnership."
