Members of the Sikh community in Nottingham will soon be
enjoying the benefits of a new temple and community centre, thanks
in part to the generosity of city businesses.
Firms including Fraser Brown Solicitors, Peart Bradley
Architects and Greenhalgh & Co donated their time and expertise
at reduced cost to help secure Alexander House in Radford, after
the 200-strong community group outgrew their previous site on Noel
Street which they had occupied for 30 years.
At 8,565 square feet (795 square metres), the new Norton Street
premises are around five times bigger than the space occupied
previously and will allow the group to offer a range of activities
in addition to worship, including cricket training for younger
members.
Paul Singh is one of the committee members involved in finding
the new temple building. He said, "It has taken us two years to
find suitable premises that provide us with the space and
versatility that we need, so we are understandably very excited
about the next steps.
"We hope to move at the end of July and the huge difference in
size will mean we are able to offer so many more facilities for the
Sikh community. The main function will remain weddings and worship
but we'll also have space for a library, gym and meeting rooms.
The new premises have a varied history, being used as a chapel
and a community centre in the past.
Paul added, "Everyone has worked really hard to make this happen
for us and we are very grateful. It just shows what can be achieved
when people work together."
Peter Thornley, Managing Partner at Fraser Brown Solicitors,
said, "We were pleased to be able to help secure Alexander House
for the benefit of the Sikh community. There is a great amount of
emphasis at the moment on the 'Big Society' and everyone doing
their bit and we feel it is important that we play our part as a
business as well as individuals."
