Loughborough University Economics Professor David Llewellyn has
been named as one of five British representatives on the
thirty-member Banking Stakeholder Group at the newly created
European Banking Authority (EBA).
A leading academic and professional consultant in international
banking regulation, Professor Llewellyn's board-level appointment
recognises the high calibre of banking and finance expertise at
Loughborough University.
Set up in January 2011, the EBA has an EU-wide remit for
ensuring a high and consistent standard of bank regulation and
supervision. Its Banking Stakeholder Group has been tasked with
monitoring and advising the EBA in all aspects of its work and
assessing the impact of its regulatory standards guidelines and
recommendations.
The Group is comprised of representatives of key stakeholders
from across the EU, including banks, think tanks, trade unions and
the academic community. Professor Llewellyn is one of six academics
from across Europe included in the officially defined category of
"Top Ranking Academics".
Based at Loughborough University's School of Business and
Economics, Professor Llewellyn brings a wealth of academic and
professional experience to the European Banking Authority. Having
published widely in the area of financial regulation, he has been a
regular consultant to regulatory agencies in several countries and,
for several years, was a Public Interest Director of the Personal
Investment Authority, which was one of the predecessor agencies of
the Financial Services Authority.
Professor Llewellyn said of his latest appointment: "Given the
recent banking crisis suffered right across the world - not least
in countries such as Ireland, the UK and Greece - it's an honour to
be involved in such a pivotal EU regulatory body tasked with the
major challenge of giving Europe the strong banking regulation it
needs at this time."
