Birmingham lawyer cooks up new career path

A lawyer from one of Birmingham's largest legal firms has given up the rat race to set up her own bespoke cake company.

Rebecca Chitty, 26, left her job as a trainee solicitor at Wragge & Co earlier this year to form Chitty's Cake Company. The Birmingham-based start-up, whose ethos is to provide tailor made cakes that taste as good as they look, offers specialist occasion cakes and cupcakes as well as a wedding cake service.

Unique to Chitty's Cake Company is its subscription service which delivers 'flavour of the month' cupcakes to subscribers each month. The concept was created by Rebecca in response to her experiences while working in the city centre.

She explains: "I've worked in the professional environment so I know what it's like to be too busy to pop out for a birthday gift or treat for the office. Chitty's offers free delivery to all city centre postcodes so we're making it easy for people who want to have their cake and eat it!"

Chitty's bespoke design service has set it apart from the competition and since its launch the company has produced a range of weird and wonderful creations including a cake that looks like a cheese platter, the door of 10 Downing Street, a pumpkin and a New York skyline, as well as a wide range of cakes based on popular cartoon characters for children.

Rebecca continues: "Creativity is central to Chitty's and our bespoke occasion cakes and cupcakes have been incredibly popular. We're able to accommodate any design or specialist ingredient requirements so we can cater for allergies, individual tastes and cultures which people really appreciate."

For those who want to try their hand at producing their own creations, Chitty's also offers regular cake decorating classes. The sessions, which are run in the Old Joint Stock pub in the city centre, are suitable for beginners and have been popular with both individuals and the corporate events market.

Rebecca adds: "The idea to offer decorating classes was also born out of my former experiences working in the city. I know that companies often struggle to come up with original corporate entertaining and teambuilding activities so our classes aim to cater for this requirement. It's also a great way for individuals to meet new people as they have fun learning a new skill."

Looking to the future the company is aiming to appear at local markets in and around Birmingham and eventually open a small shop dedicated to both occasion and everyday cakes in the city centre.
