A Nottingham design team commissioned for a £16m Sport and
Health Science Facility at Teesside University has been recognised
in the 2011 RICS Awards for the North East, winning the Design and
Innovation category.
The team comprises of architects CPMG, structural engineers BWB
Consulting, mechanical and electrical engineers CPW and landscape
architects FPCR. They worked alongside project managers
Evolve, quantity surveyors Arcadis AYH and Morgan Sindall who were
the main contractors on the project.
Named Centuria South, the new facility is a multi purpose
building comprising of a spacious new dental training facility and
an NHS dental surgery alongside additional facilities for the
School of Health and Sports Therapy including state of the art
laboratories and a hydrotherapy pool. It also includes an
innovative four storey atrium that links the new facility to an
existing building and flexible laboratory space.
Key priorities for the university were to create a modern
showcase facility to enhance the campus and provide an attractive
and stimulating teaching/learning environment. The new development
also needed a design life of 60 years with minimal maintenance, be
an environmentally conscious building and have a "very good" BREEAM
rating. All these were met and the project was also delivered
on time and 3% under budget.
"The RICS awards are very prestigious and for a Nottingham
design team to have won this award and received this recognition in
the North East is fantastic news," said Nick Gregory, director of
CPMG. "This is our third new building for Teeside University
and we are very proud of it. The feedback from the client, academic
staff and students has been really positive - they really seem to
enjoy using the building which is very satisfying."
