Marketing Birmingham, the city's public/private sector strategic
marketing partnership, has strengthened its Board with the
appointment of two high profile experts in health and academia - as
it develops Business Birmingham, the city's newly launched inward
investment programme. Julie Moore, Chief Executive of University
Hospital Birmingham and Professor David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor
of the University of Birmingham, will help to raise the city's
international reputation as a centre of innovation for health,
research and technology.
Healthcare along with the technology and research led sectors of
low carbon R&D, transport technologies and digital media were
identified as areas of strength and opportunity for the city by
global location specialists, IBM-PLI, and are target sectors for
Business Birmingham.
As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, Professor
Eastwood heads up an organisation with 6,000 staff, 28,000 students
and a turnover of £460 million. The University contributes
more than £800 million to the West Midlands region. As
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eastwood is leading major projects to
develop the distinctive, high quality student experience at
Birmingham and to enhance further the University's research power.
Over the next decade the University will invest over half a billion
pounds in new campus developments. In addition it will be
opening new centres in key locations such as Guangzhou and Chicago
as well as India and Latin America.
Professor Eastwood said: "The University sector has a hugely
important role to play in generating new knowledge and ideas that
can benefit the city. We operate in an environment where the city
and the University need to promote themselves internationally and
to establish global partnerships. I look forward to working with
Business Birmingham in developing international activity and
building Birmingham's reputation as a leading destination for
investment in new ideas and technologies."
Professor Eastwood is joined by Chief Executive of University
Hospital Birmingham, Julie Moore.
As Chief Executive of University Hospital Birmingham, Julie
Moore leads an internationally renowned hospital with a £520
million turnover that treats 700,000 patients annually, including
all military casualties brought back to UK - a highly acclaimed
care service. Under her leadership, the hospital opened a new
£545 million PFI hospital building on time and on budget last
year. University Hospital Birmingham is also host to the Royal
Centre for Defence Medicine and the Birmingham Clinical Research
Academy. In 2011, the National Institute of Health Research Centre
for Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology was opened at the
Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Julie Moore is at the cutting edge of healthcare innovation and
management and well placed to help Marketing Birmingham showcase
this sector strength internationally:
"The unique environment Birmingham offers to develop and
implement bench to bedside translational research is being
recognised not only regionally but nationally and internationally.
Birmingham has the ideal infrastructure to deliver academic,
business and clinical excellence that will not only improve quality
outcomes for patients, but will also help attract investors and
drive economic growth and job creation in the city and wider
region."
Marketing Birmingham is working to align the promotional
activities of its visitor economy and inward investment programmes,
nationally and internationally, with that of the city's leading
institutions and businesses. Chairman Paul Kehoe believes this
joined-up approach will help to raise Birmingham's global
visibility and reputation as a place to live, work and do
business.
Paul Kehoe, Chairman of Marketing Birmingham said:
"I'm delighted that David and Julie are joining the board.
With these appointments we are building on our work to align
the city's promotion to global audiences, strengthening the message
that the city is a hub of cutting edge innovation, expertise and
business opportunity as well as being a good place to live and
work. The city's public and private sector is now working more
closely together to ensure the Birmingham message comes across loud
and clear.
"Both University Hospital Birmingham and the University of
Birmingham have international reputations and programmes that see
them fly the flag for the city across the world. By aligning this
work with our international investment drive we are leveraging
existing activity and ensuring that clarity of message."
Julie Moore and Professor David Eastwood will attend the next
Marketing Birmingham Board meeting on 20th April.
