Last year, Coventry University's Faculty of Health and Life
Sciences, under the leadership of Professor Jane Coad, were
successful in gaining over £1.3m from the Department of
Health for a range of projects around the complex palliative care
for children and young people.
One of the projects to benefit from the money is the development
of an exciting and innovative E-learning programme for nurses,
doctors and other health professionals.
The programme, which will be officially launched on 5 May at
Coventry University, will be a flexible, accredited E-learning
programme which will focus on the needs of children and young
people who are in need of palliative and complex care services from
a number of healthcare providers.
The modules, which have been especially developed for the
programme, can be taken as stand-alone units or learning as part of
a continuing education course or professional development
opportunities.
The E-learning programme has been designed following
consultation with senior academics, clinical experts, user groups
and charities to ensure that the content reflects current
contemporary issues in relation to palliative and complex care for
children, young people and their families.
Professor Jane Coad, who is the lead academic on this said:
"This E-learning programme and suite of modules will assist in
the transformation of the workforce and up-skilling of health and
social care practitioners who wish to expand and enhance their
practice around palliative and complex care for children, young
people and their families.
"A specific feature of this E-learning programme is the unique
way it is delivered and assessed which is entirely online via the
Internet."
Each interactive web-based learning module uses case scenarios
and electronic learning styles such as online classroom,
e-activities and discussion forums to encourage students to work
together online. It will not only develop their specialist
knowledge but also help them to appreciate how each other's roles
combine to offer family centred care.
Professor Coad added:
"This E-learning approach enables the course to be flexible and
learner-focused and as there is no requirement to attend the
University, students are able to study from home or their
workplace."
The launch of the E-learning programme takes place at the
University's Alan Berry Building at 1pm on Thursday 5 May and is
open to any health care professional with an interest in this
field.
It will provide an opportunity to meet with the course leaders
and to discuss how the modules can be taken as part of continued
professional development within the work place.
