Coventry University has taken to the streets this year to
advertise the Coventry School of Art and Design annual degree show
by using eco-friendly graffiti.
Over the past few days, symbols depicting all disciplines of the
arts have started to appear on the city's pavements to promote the
flurry of activity which will be taking place in May and June.
The University has enlisted the help of 'Streetvertise' a
company that promotes events through the means of eco-advertising.
The flexible nature of pavement and road advertising means that it
can be targeted towards niche markets.
There is a strong Coventry link to 'Streetvertise' as the
company's creative director, Paul McKelvie, is a Coventry graduate
and the designs that are being used on the pavements were created
by another Coventry graduate and University graphic designer Giles
Halton.
Jenny Page, the marketing co-ordinator at Coventry University
who is responsible for the quirky marketing strategy for this
year's degree show, said:
"It is apt that the designer of the branding for this year's
degree show and the creative director of the company we've used to
promote it are both Coventry University arts graduates. It is an
indication of the kind of talent we produce here and the degree
show is the best way to see the work of the current crop of young
creative talent."
Even though the degree show is a school of art and design event,
other departments have helped to give this year's show an added
boost. The stencils used to create the designs were produced by the
Faculty of Engineering and Computing using their state-of-the-art
laser cutting equipment.
The pavement art can be seen near to the Council House in Earl
Street and at the upper precinct shopping centre. Posters
advertising the degree show 2011 will be going up in the next few
days.
Jenny Page added:
"We wanted some promotional material that was creative and
effective. The fact that the advertising is eco-friendly is an
added bonus."
