Businesses offered guidelines for setting up staff appraisal system

Guidelines for setting up a staff appraisal system have been made available to businesses across the county free of charge. The guidelines are part of a new appraisal system recently developed by a firm of Shropshire business improvement consultants for their professional and service sector clients.

Specifically designed for businesses that do not have their own qualified personnel manager, the guidelines will help managers and owners to conduct professional appraisals and improve staff performance for the overall good of the business.

Speaking from Cornwall where she is currently training clients in operating the appraisal system which was developed by her company as part of a total business support package, Ellen Morley, Principal of The Business Company near Shrewsbury, said:

"In today's climate all businesses, however large or small, have to develop to survive. Consistently high performing, motivated people are key to that. But individuals need to know what they have to do, why they have to do it and how they will be measured in terms of doing it successfully. They need constructive, regular feedback on their performance and coaching to help them improve. But this can be a tall order for SMEs that don't have a dedicated personnel department and that is why The Business Company is offering free guidelines to help local businesses carry out appraisals.

"To be effective, however, appraisals need to link into other key activities. For example, the objectives agreed with an individual must be followed up through the performance management system and should link to the objectives in the business plan or for the department. And individuals need to see where those objectives link within the business so that they can buy into the bigger business vision, goals and culture.

"Setting up an appraisal system helps to strengthen communication links between individuals and their managers and create more positive and closer working relationships. We have worked with all sizes of businesses to develop systems that fully engage people and support the bigger business picture and the same applies thoughout."
