Business overseas needs careful planning

Shropshire business travellers planning a crucial trip to clinch that all-important deal must make sure they are protected by the right kind of insurance.

Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers, in Newport and Shrewsbury, said business travel insurance was completely different to the typical policy taken out by holidaymakers.

"It's all in the small print, and it's vital that business travellers don't neglect this important element of their trip."

He said some typical business policies may restrict the amount travellers could claim for and the number of times claims could be made.

"Make sure the amount insured and the number of claims applies per person, per trip, and is not restricted to a one-off claim in the life of the policy.

"And if your husband, wife or partner is travelling with you, you should check the company policy covers family members and leisure trips, or you will need to arrange separate travel insurance for them."

Dave said if the business trip was a particularly critical one, companies may like to consider even greater cover.

"If it's vital that the trip goes ahead, no matter what, you might consider a policy that covers the cost of sending out a replacement colleague if the original traveller is taken ill or forced to stay at home for any reason."

And when it comes to taking items with you on the trip, Dave said business travellers should pay even greater attention to the details of the cover provided by the policy.

"If you're planning on taking your golf clubs for a swift round between meetings, check that you're covered for loss or damage to your sporting or personal equipment, and to any hired equipment too.

"And if you decide to check your laptop into the hold, be sure that your policy covers items checked in, rather than just those carried as hand luggage.

"It's all about being well prepared before you leave - as well as preparing for your important business negotiations before the trip, make sure you're well protected by double checking the finer details of your cover. You never know when you might need it."
