National property and construction consultancy Wakemans is
acting as BREEAM Assessors and sustainability advisor for the
London Array Offshore Wind Farm's Operations and Maintenance Base
in Ramsgate, Kent; which has been designed by award winning
Midlands based BBLB Architects.
London Array is a major offshore wind farm situated in the outer
Thames Estuary. The purpose built operations and maintenance base
will accommodate up to 90 staff once Phase One is fully
operational. It will include computerised monitoring and control
facilities, a workshop, offices and storage facilities. BBLB is
also acting as the project manager for the development.
BBLB designed the building to BREEAM 'excellent' standard - the
leading and most widely used environmental assessment for
buildings, which also sets the standard for best practise in
sustainable design.
Andrew Pennell, Associate Director of Wakemans comments: "This
exciting project will include a large specialist designed green
roof and take advantage of natural light, along with a high
specification fit out with sustainability and functionality as key
criteria. Wakemans' role is to ensure that the client's strict
requirements and sustainability goals are met in full."
The facility is in a prominent position in the Port of Ramsgate
and the use of the green roof will enhance the overall
architectural merit of the building whilst contributing to the
already high sustainability credentials of the building.
The first 630MW phase of the London Array Offshore Wind Farm
will consist of 175 turbines generating enough electricity to meet
the electrical needs of over 470,000 homes.
The Operations and Maintenance Base is scheduled for completion
by Kent based Mansell Construction Services Ltd in early
Autumn.
