Shrewsbury welcome back the well-known clock
Residents and commuters in Shrewsbury can now take a time check
with ease after a well-known landmark has been restored.
Pughs of Shrewsbury's enormous clock has been in place on the
face of their building in Longden Coleham for over 25 years.
But as part of a major redevelopment programme at the historic
premises, the clock was removed for refurbishment.
Now Smiths of Derby have fully restored the local landmark and
returned it to its rightful place high above the street.
Pughs managing director, Peter Forrest, said: "The clock has
been missing for several months since we began the work on our
building, and it's great to see it back on the front wall.
"The reinstatement of the clock is the final piece in the jigsaw
and marks the completion of our ambitious redevelopment plans.
"We're hoping it will now be safely in place for another 25
years after such careful restoration work.
"It's used by locals and commuters for a quick time check as
they travel through the busy Longden Coleham area, and we've had
many compliments already from people saying they're very pleased to
see it back."
The restoration of the clock is just part of a huge
redevelopment plan which has seen Pughs of Shrewsbury create new
chapels of rest, a new family room, and new offices for staff at
their riverside premises.
There is also a new disabled entrance with dedicated undercover
parking and a wheelchair ramp that leads directly into the
offices.
The new facilities have been created with care in order to
preserve the historic elements of the buildings which date back to
the late 18th and early 19th Century.
