A Warwickshire company is targeting the hugely lucrative global
major international sports events market at the world's most
prestigious sporting conference.
Commercial Doctor Ltd, of Chase Meadow, Warwick, is joining a
West Midlands delegation to Sport Accord, the premier global event
that brings together more than 1,500 representatives from all
international sports organisations, sports governing bodies and
host cities.
This year's Sport Accord convention is being held from April 3-8
at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel, London, where UK Trade
& Investment (UKTI) and Advantage West Midlands have booked a
stand for West Midlands companies to showcase their expertise in
supplying goods and services to major sports events and venues.
The region's attendance at Sport Accord is aimed at identifying
opportunities beyond the London 2012 Olympics, particularly looking
ahead to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, 2014 FIFA World Cup
and the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth
Games and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Sport Accord is expected to contribute £3m initially to
the UK economy, with much more expected through new contracts in
the long term.
Commercial Doctor Ltd is a consultancy firm, which specialises
in helping its clients make the most of global sports business
opportunities arising from events and projects.
Established in 2005, the company completed UKTI's Passport to
Export programme for new exporters last year.
Managing Director Philip Gray said: "Sport Accord is the one
event where the whole sports world gets together and every activity
is represented.
"We will be promoting the capability of the West Midlands sports
industry by showing how companies that are successfully supplying
goods and services to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
can replicate this model in Brazil, Russia, Qatar and other global
event host countries.
"Brazil is a major target market for us and UKTI recently
provided funding for me to take a training course in Portuguese.
This is proving to be hugely helpful as I'm now gathering
information on the best way of entering the market and for putting
together proposals for potential Brazilian and UK clients."
Jim Johnston, West Midlands Business Manager for the 2012 Games,
said: "Sport Accord is an unparalleled opportunity to promote the
West Midlands to an international audience, just 15 months before
the start of the London 2012 Games.
"Firms in the West Midlands have already supplied previous major
international sports events. For example, Simworx of Kingswinford
sold two mobile motion simulators to a sponsor of the Turin Winter
Olympics 2006; and Brinton Carpets of Kidderminster supplied
flooring for the new Terminal 3 building at Indira Gandhi
International Airport in Delhi, ahead of the Delhi Commonwealth
Games last year.
"West Midlands businesses have already won contracts worth
nearly half a billion pounds to supply goods and services to the
London 2012 Games, and associated projects. Sport Accord now gives
these companies the opportunity to use the expertise gained from
their London 2012 success, to bid for similar tenders from upcoming
major sports events around the world."
