A local housebuilder has lent its financial support to a historian who is cycling from Northampton to Paris to raise money for Bletchley Park National Codes Centre.

Dr Mark Baldwin's 300-mile trip began in Northampton on Friday afternoon and he called in at the museum, in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, where Redrow Homes' local sales consultant Sarah Price waved him off, after the company sponsored him £250.

A long-time supporter of Bletchley Park, and expert on the Enigma machine, Mark, from Cleobury, is aiming to be in Paris by Wednesday. He is being accompanied by his friend John Cutler, an experienced cyclist.

Delighted with Redrow's sponsorship, Mark said: "I find it very heartening that people in the vicinity recognise the importance of Bletchley Park and are prepared to give something in order to improve it."

Redrow is building new homes nearby at Bletchley Park and, recognising the importance of the location and significance of the museum, wanted to support Mark's fund raising efforts.

Mary Timlin, sales director for Redrow Homes (South Midlands), at the company's head office is in Northampton, said: "As the museum is so close to our apartments venture, when we heard about Mark's tremendous efforts we felt we could give his coffers a boost.

"More than just a housebuilder we're proud to support the communities in which we build. Bletchley Park is keeping the rich history of this area alive for generations to come and Mark's support to them is to be admired."

Bletchley Park is home to a number of Second World War codebreakers, including the famous Enigma cipher machines. It was also the location for Britain's secret code-breaking operation during the war. Several million coded messages were broken, providing top-class intelligence, which helped the Allies win the war.

The Bletchley Park Trust does not receive any public funding and therefore is dependent on money generated from donations or any additional on-site or off-site activities.

Redrow is building a selection of one and two-bedroom apartments, off Sherwood Drive, opposite Bletchley Park Train Station. Sales information: 01908 968262.
