The first vicarage in the UK to meet the Government's Code for
Sustainable Homes Level 6 is to be fitted out by leading building
services provider J S Wright.
The Birmingham company has teamed up with top
developer/contractor Galliford Try in a £300,000 deal to
design and build the mechanical services for the zero-carbon
vicarage being built in the grounds of St John's Church in Wembley,
West London.
As well as enabling the building to meet the highest
environmental standards, J S Wright will be equipping a new
community centre to BREEAM Excellent standard and 20 affordable
homes built to Level 4 of the Code for social landlord
LHA-ASRA.
J S Wright is to design and install underfloor heating linked to
a ground source heat pump and a domestic water service that
incorporates rainwater harvesting. It will also be providing all
the properties with ventilation and above ground drainage.
The company has already begun work on site on the brownfield
development, which will also benefit from photovoltaic panels when
it is completed in August 2011.
The vicarage is to be the new home for the resident vicar, the
Reverend Francis Adu-Boachie, while the community centre will
be used by the Parish Church Council of St John's. The 12 flats and
terrace of eight homes that make up the social element are for
local residents and workers that cannot afford to rent on the
private market.
The attractive low-carbon scheme has also been designed to
enhance the appearance of the listed Victorian St John's Church,
designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
Marcus Aniol, Managing Director of J S Wright, said: "We are
delighted to have been appointed to lead the way in greener housing
by fitting out such an imaginative development to Level 6 of the
Government Code, especially as it is expected that all grant-funded
social housing will have to meet the exacting standard by
2016."
