Licensing specialists are inviting all Derby licensees to an
exclusive seminar that will spell out clear and practical steps to
help beat a tough trading climate. It will also alert businesses to
licensing reforms that could affect their livelihoods.
The changes, which include awarding more power to Councils and
an increase in licensing fees, would add to the red tape and
financial costs already imposed on licensees, putting more pressure
on an industry already struggling with closures.
The seminar will look specifically at how Derby Licensees can
maximise the potential of their licence and how to protect it.
David Lucas of Fraser Brown solicitors, East Midlands'
specialists in the field, will be speaking at the seminar:
"Generally licensed premises in Derby face the same issues as
anywhere - increasing bureaucracy and red tape and the economic
climate reducing customers, but knowledge is power and
understanding the new legislation that they will encounter does
provide an advantage.
"The bars and restaurants of Derby city centre form part of its
personality and project a reputation as a successful and thriving
destination. The key is to present a broad offer with something for
everyone and licensees need to understand the extent of what is
open to them."
The seminar will also look very practically at how Derby
licensees can improve their offering at minimal expense, for
example, how to apply for additional licences to enable venues to
hold outdoor events in the summer. Or remove any conditions that
remain on the license that are no longer required - a hangover from
previous system - and make sure that a licence allows for
additional entertainment - such as bands at bank holidays.
The seminar takes place at Pride Park on Tuesday 22 March,
starting at 4.00p.m.
