People worried about the escalating costs of getting divorced if
legal aid funding is withdrawn are being offered a fixed fee
alternative by Gainsborough-based Burton & Dyson
Solicitors.
The firm has launched a new service whereby it can undertake
uncontested divorce cases for £795, including VAT and Court
fees. The launch comes as Burton & Dyson expands its family law
department with the recruitment of new senior solicitor Gemma
Garfoot who will play a key role in the new service.
The Government is looking to withdraw legal aid funding for a
wide range of cases, including most divorces. A public consultation
into the proposals closed on February 14th, with the Ministry of
Justice expected to publish its response this spring.
An uncontested divorce assumes that both parties have agreed to
the divorce and neither has any formal objections.
Senior partner Philip Westcott said: "With legal aid funding
looking increasingly likely to be withdrawn, many people will
understandably be worried about meeting the costs of their
divorce.
"For a fixed fee, we can offer our clients a professional,
understanding divorce service at a reasonable cost and without any
hidden surprises. For this fee, clients can have all their divorce
paperwork taken care of, while having email and telephone access to
an experienced lawyer who will keep them informed of the progress
of their case at every stage.
"With the addition of Gemma, who brings considerable experience
and expertise to our family team, this seemed an ideal time to
launch this new service.
"Of course, an uncontested divorce is not always suitable for
everyone and, in such cases, we can advise clients on the best way
forward, including mediation."
