Marlon Brando claimed that he "could have been a contender" and
people from the legal fraternity who share similar ambitions have
begun training in the noble art of boxing. The lure of the newest
prize in white collar boxing's calendar - the Ralph Lewis QC
Memorial Cup - and the chance to fundraise for Marie Curie Cancer
Care at this black tie charity event has tempted barristers,
solicitors, clerks and some clients out of their sharp suits and
into shorts and boxing gloves.
"Our initial mailer seeking volunteer boxers generated an
excellent response, with 30 fighters confirmed to date, men and
women, keen to step into the ring, all of whom have undergone their
induction at the Fighting Fit City Gym in Lionel Street,
Birmingham," says Tony McDaid, Practice Director at No5 Chambers,
promoters of the event.
"We anticipate a stable of 40 boxers in total, who will undergo
a six month fitness and boxing training programme. This long, hard
road will see boxers matched on skill and fitness, leading to the
headline event at The Burlington Hotel in New Street on Friday 8th
July, where the fighters will slug it out in several bouts, each of
3 two-minute-rounds. The boxer scoring the most points will be
awarded the Ralph Lewis QC Memorial Cup and all fighters will win
the respect of their ringside peers."
The compere for this knockout evening will be well-known sports'
presenter Gary Newbon, who will commentate on the boxing bouts and
chair the charity auction.
Former Head of No5 Chambers, Ralph Lewis QC, was a promising
boxer while at Oxford University and it remained one of his twin
sporting loves, the other being Welsh Rugby. He died in July 2010
within eight weeks of being diagnosed with cancer. His
friends and colleagues at No5 Chambers decided that a charity
boxing event would be a fitting memorial, with all proceeds going
to Marie Curie.
