Sheree Peaple, Head of Leicester De Montfort Law School at De
Montfort University, has been re-appointed to the Education and
Training Committee of one of the UK's biggest legal regulators.
Sheree, a property law expert, first joined the Solicitors
Regulation Authority's (SRA) Education and Training Committee as an
external member in 2006. The committee is tasked with deciding on
educational policy for all prospective and existing solicitors,
from degree level through to professional training and
qualifications as well as continuing professional development. The
committee also deals with issues such as transfer arrangements for
overseas qualified lawyers who wish to become solicitors in the UK
and accreditations of various specialist lawyers.
The Committee comprises five external members from the education
sector, private legal practice and public sector organisations.
Committee chair Dr Susan Bews said: "The SRA's Education and
Training Committee undertakes a critical function in the setting
and development of standards for those delivering legal services,
so that members of the public can be assured that they will receive
high quality legal advice.
"In 2011 the Committee will be playing a major role in relation
to the fundamental review of Legal Education and Training which the
SRA, in co-operation with the Bar Standards Board and the Institute
of Legal Executives Professional Standards, recently announced.
These five members will bring a breadth of expertise to this vital
and complex work."
Commenting on her appointment, Sheree said: "Legal education
faces a challenging time ahead; with the introduction of
alternative business structures and outcomes focussed regulation,
we need to work hard to ensure legal education is fit for purpose.
I am thrilled and delighted to be a key part of the decision making
process."
