A unique government offer has allowed a first time buyer to step
into home ownership - and a dream home at that.
MCD Developments, which specialises in mixed use regeneration
projects in the UK's major towns and cities, has transformed
Birmingham city centre's Brindley House - formerly the unsightly BT
Switch tower - to provide 182 brand new, luxury, one and two
bedroom apartments across 17 floors.
And thanks to the First Time Buyer Initiative scheme, the last
of its type in the city, human resources worker Mandy Twining took
her first step on the property ladder after accepting a 50 per cent
finance offer.
The government has pledged to fund up to half the cost of the
apartments for buyers on an interest free basis for the first three
years, in association with the Orbit Housing Group.
As the scheme is intended to get buyers back on the property
ladder it is far wider ranging than its title suggests.
It also includes buyers who may have lost a property in a
relationship breakdown and those who, for whatever reason, have
needed to start again.
Mandy, who recently moved into her new apartment, is delighted
to finally own her own property.
She said: "I had been renting for four years at the Orion
Building in the city centre and was keen to buy after learning that
I had paid out a staggering £30,000 on rent fees.
"Looking at the apartments within my price range they were not
really of the quality I would have been looking for but then a
friend alerted me to first time buyer schemes and I discovered the
MCD Development at Brindley House.
"I spoke to Carole at MCD who was extremely helpful and arranged
a viewing for me.
"I instantly fell in love with everything about the apartments,
particularly the sunken bath, staggering views of St Paul's square
and the surrounding areas and its proximity to the city centre.
"Carole explained the scheme to me in full including a breakdown
of costs and the options available to me. It is a good deal and if
you choose to pay back the cost of the apartment over a period of
time you will have 100 per cent ownership of it.
"Everything went smoothly, MCD organised it all taking the leg
work out of the process and it is great to finally be settled into
my own home."
Carole Allen, a Sales Advisor at MCD Developments guided Mandy
through the process.
She said: "In this economic climate it is obviously difficult
for young people to take their first step or in fact for anyone to
get back into the property market but this rare scheme offers a
great opportunity for people to make that jump, and into brand new,
high quality properties.
"There are only a few one and two bedroom units left and with
this offer ending soon it is unlikely that such a fantastic deal
will be available in Birmingham again."
