A competition organised for the first time by leading Derby law
firm Flint Bishop for students at Derby College's Joseph Wright
Centre has supported two future lawyers with their plans to go to
University.
In order to win the Flint Bishop Excellence Award, law students
at the College's Joseph Wright Centre were invited to write a 2,000
word essay about whether justice is achieved in the UK legal
system.
The standard of entries was so high that the panel of judges,
which comprised of three partners from Flint Bishop and a team of
the legal lecturers and senior staff from Derby College, were
unable to pick one outright winner, so this year's award has been
shared between students Ben Cooper (18) from Oakwood and Josh White
(19) from Derby.
The pair were presented with a trophy and £250 of book
vouchers each by commercial property partner Heather Dixon from
Flint Bishop, which they plan to use for their first year of
University this September.
Ben, who was home-schooled and is now hoping to get a place at
Leeds University to study Law, said:
"It was great to be given the chance to enter this competition
and even better to win. It was also great to be able to get to know
senior lawyers from Flint Bishop to discuss future career
options.
And Josh, a former pupil at St Benedict's School who has applied
to Derby, Nottingham and Leicester Universities to study Law
added:
"The financial pressures of going to university are hard enough
so this prize is extremely welcome for the various text books that
I will no doubt need."
Commenting on the Flint Bishop Excellence Award, Heather Dixon,
said:
"Our firm has a long-standing relationship with the College and
I am delighted to have been on the judging panel for the inaugural
Flint Bishop Excellence Awards. All the entries were of an
exceptional standard, which made choosing just one winner
impossible."
"Congratulations go to Ben and Josh; we look forward to
following their progress as the move on to university."
