On Thursday 3 March, the High Commissioners of Nigeria,
Cameroon, Ghana and Kenya, together with representatives of other
African embassies, will be meeting African students at Coventry
Cathedral to address the question of what African Governments are
doing for them.
The event, which starts at 1.30pm, has been organised by the
Association of African Students in collaboration with the African
Studies Centre at Coventry University.
It will be the first time that so many senior diplomats from a
number of African countries have come together for a student-led
event. Each representative will make a presentation which will be
followed by a question and answer session.
The University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Madeleine Atkins,
will officially welcome the High Commissioners and open the
event.
Bruce Baker, the Director of the African Studies Centre at
Coventry University said:
"As well as students and staff of the University, the event
hopes to welcome the wider African communities and other interested
persons from non-government organisations, business and local
authorities.
"This is a unique event which will bring together so many High
Commissioners to speak on such a key topic. It is also a very
important event for African students as they will have the
opportunity to be addressed by the representatives of their
countries and to ask them specific questions."
This is the second high profile event for the African Studies
Centre since November as they hosted an international conference on
Nigeria last year.
Bruce Baker added:
"Getting so many African governments involved is a coup for
Coventry. Coventry University is a popular destination for African
students and we recently introduced a £50k scholarship
programme which is proving to be equally as popular.
"Coventry's internationalisation programme is enhancing our
status as a truly global University."
Everyone is welcome to attend the event at the Cathedral on
Thursday 3 March at 1.30pm and there will be a party afterwards in
celebration of African Youth at Studio 54 in Cox Street with
African food and music. No registration is required and entry is
free to both.
