Derbyshire firm Wildgoose Construction has started work on a
£2.35m contract to build a medical centre which will serve
6,000 patients.
The Ashover-based company is constructing the 800-metre square,
two-storey medical centre behind the Glebe Field Centre in
Crich.
The project is being built on behalf of primary care property
specialists Primary Horizons based at Pride Park in Derby.
In addition to five GPs and a wide range of primary care
services, the centre will include space for podiatry and district
nursing services, provided by Derbyshire Community Health Services.
There will also be an on-site pharmacy
It is due to be completed by July 2011 and will involve building
into a steep hill because of the lack of available suitable
sites.
Tim Walker, Wildgoose managing director, said the company was
very pleased to be working with Primary Horizons on the new
centre.
He said: "We are delighted to be working with Primary Horizons
Ltd on the new two-storey medical centre for the people of Crich,
which will include a ground floor pharmaceutical retail outlet for
the convenience of the public.
"The build is not without its difficulties, as it is on a steep
sloping site which means an extensive cut and fill operation and
the formation of a plateau which will serve as the facility's car
park and will give access the surgery at first floor
level.
"We are also enhancing the joint access route to the Glebe
community centre as part of the contract, making it a truly
community minded project."
The works will also involve the formation of new access to the
site, through an existing allotment at the side of the Glebe Field
Centre and the installation of a new footpath alongside Oakwell
Drive, including the relocation of the existing retaining wall that
forms the boundary of the vicarage.
Once completed, the centre will benefit more than 6,000 people
in the local community of Crich and the surrounding villages.
Steve Maleham, managing director of Derby-based Primary Horizons
Group, said: "We are delighted to see the Crich project come to
fruition and look forward to a successful partnership with
Wildgoose to deliver a high quality health centre, designed to
modern standards for the benefit of patients and staff."
