Derbyshire firm Wildgoose Construction is due to start work on a
£600,000 project to renovate a Victorian school.
The Ashover-based company will begin building a children's
centre at the Mary Swanwick School in Chesterfield.
Children's centres are a one-stop shop to give families with
young children the best start in life by offering services which
may include:
• pre-school education
• childcare
• family health services
• information and advice for parents
• training such as IT
• counselling
• Jobcentre Plus.
The contract, with Derbyshire County Council, will also see the
refurbishment of the existing school and alterations to form an ICT
suite.
The firm has already completed the partial demolition of a
Victorian built block at the school, which has 250 pupils aged
between 3 and 11.
The project is due to be completed at the end of February
2011.
Tim Walker, managing director of Wildgoose, said the project had
been particularly interesting because many of the firm's staff had
once attended the school.
He said: "'Wildgoose is once again delighted to be working with
Derbyshire County Council on the improvement of the educational
facilities within the county and in particular, at Mary Swanwick
School, which is close to our base and where many of our staff
started their education.
"The introduction of a children's centre and ITC suite will
benefit all age groups who attend the school and through the vision
of the county architects, we will create a state of the art
learning centre which will enhance the reputation and the
facilities of the school."
