One of Nottingham's leading solicitors for the creative industries John Buckby, has been appointed to the Board of the Media Archive for Central England, MACE.

Buckby is a creative industries and Intellectual Property (IP) specialist at law firm Berryman in the firm's Commercial IP and Technology Media and Telecommunications (TMT) teams.

He already works closely with regional organisations dedicated to the creative industries, including UKTI, NCN (Nottingham Creative Network), and CIN (Creative Industries Network) in Derbyshire, of which he is an active Board member, and runs monthly 'legal clinics' for creative businesses at various creative hubs across the Midlands.

Founded in 1995, MACE is the principal moving image archive service provider in the Midlands and one of eight publicly funded regional film archives and a member of the Film Archive Forum (FAF). It works with a wide range of partners across the region to provide access to the Midlands' moving image heritage. It is an independent limited company and registered charity, currently based at Leicester University.

The MACE Board is tasked with creating and maintaining the regional archive for the Midlands. The organisation is led by James Patterson, Director. Berryman's John Buckby joins an impressive line-up of existing Board members, that includes a number of leading lights from the Midlands' media and creative sectors - David Rose MACE Chairman and senior development executive at Rolls Royce; Mike Dolan, Programme Editor, Broadcast at ITV; the BBC's Head of UK Regional Archives Gary Campbell; Christine Fyfe who is Librarian and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Leicester; Sam Bestwick, Director of Engagement, East for the Museum, Library and Archive Council; Ray Johnston, Professor of Documentary at Staffordshire University, Director of Staffordshire Film Archive and a member of Screen West Midlands' Board; Amanda Huntley, Managing Director of Huntley Film Archives; and Laraine Porter, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at De Montfort University.

Of joining the MACE Board, John Buckby says: "It's an exciting time to become involved with a successful regional film archive.  MACE is a progressive and forward-thinking organisation, and is very well regarded in the industry.  I'm really looking forward to working with MACE more closely, and continuing to advise on relevant legal issues - including the licensing in and out of archive material and the exploitation of new media.  It's a perfect fit with the work we do in Berryman's TMT team."

Berryman's John Buckby is a creative industries specialist - with a background in the music industry - and has been involved in many different creative industry businesses.  He works closely with creative businesses at Nottingham's Antenna and Confetti, and also runs legal advice sessions aimed at creative industries businesses at leading incubation spaces across the East Midlands, including at LCB Depot in Leicester, Nottingham's Broadway Media Centre, and Quad in Derby.

In 2010, MACE secured a £440,000 award from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a new project Full Circle, which connects people with the screen heritage in the Midlands, supporting 60 communities in a region-wide search for local film footage.
