A 19-year-old technical apprentice from Tipton has won a top award from the building services industry for his exceptional skills and expertise.

Tom Hollywood, who works for Birmingham-based J S Wright, received the coveted West Midlands Incorporated Engineer of the Year Award at the BEST (Building Engineering Services Training) Awards.

J S Wright, which is celebrating 120 years as a leading nationwide building services provider, was also presented with a special Commitment to Training Award in the form of a free training course provided by the Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association, for its efforts in developing tomorrow's engineers.

The awards were judged by Kevin Dowd of Summitskills, Martin Prince of the Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association, and Rachelle Schofield of BEST, and presented by Kevin McCallistair, National President of the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors, and Dr Mark Brenner, Chief Executive of BEST.

Tom, who joined J S Wright at its Aston headquarters in 2009, is currently working towards his National Certificate in Building Services Engineering at Level 3.

He is one of five apprentices at J S Wright's Aston head office and a member of the JSW Academy which helps to develop the individual and collective responsibilities of the company's apprentices and young engineers throughout the country.

Tom, who received a certificate and trophy and a £75 Argos voucher, has gained on-site experience of working on two major apartment schemes at Water Mill Lane and Central Street in London and a new extra care scheme at Lightmoor Village in Telford.

Rachelle Schofield, Training Adviser for BEST, said: "Tom has proved to be an excellent student which has recently seen him being awarded a college prize for student of the term. Within his company, he has demonstrated a deep desire to take information on board, use that information, and assist his colleagues wherever possible. He is growing in confidence every day and is a much valued member of his team."

Marcus Aniol, J S Wright Managing Director, said: "We are delighted with Tom's success, which is a tribute to his hard work and enthusiasm as well as the support of his colleagues and our academy. Winning a lifetime award to training is also a tremendous honour for our company and confirms our belief that we lead the field in training and developing the engineers of the future."
