Kings Heath-born pop star Toyah Willcox is to be guest speaker
at Birmingham Chamber of Commerce's 'Women Who….' annual
lunch.
The flame-haired former punk rocker - who has had eight top 40
singles, and has released 18 albums - will spill the beans on a
30-year career in showbiz, and her interest in social issues.
She is particularly passionate about education, and proudly
'waves the banner' for women in the world of business and
entertainment.
And two years ago she took part in the 'Great Walk to Beijing'
to raise money for fellow singer Olivia Newton-John's cancer
charity.
She is also a well known actress - she began her career at the
Old Rep drama school in Birmingham and she has appeared in a
variety of roles, from Shakespearian plays to the Rocky Horror
Show.
She has also starred in a number of feature films, including
'Jubilee' and 'Quadrophenia', and her many TV roles have included
'Quatermass' and 'Minder'. She has also appeared in the
controversial reality show 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of
Here'.
Toyah lives in Pershore, and made headlines in 2002 when she
fronted a successful protest against plans to site a centre for
asylum seekers next to the Worcestershire village of
Throckmorton.
The 'Women Who...' event is on January 28 is at the Hyatt
Regency hotel, in Birmingham city centre.
