Nottinghamshire firms are being urged to learn Chinese to boost
their export chances as Chinese New Year celebrations - the year of
the Rabbit - kick off next month.
The Mandarin language and cultural awareness training is being
held at Jurys Inn, Nottingham on Friday 4 February and is open to
all companies, but free for companies signed up to UK Trade &
Investment's (UKTI) Passport to Export and Gateway to Global growth
programmes.
The training, which will begin with an informal tea ceremony, is
being organised on behalf of UKTI by Derbyshire-based language
experts, Elanga International with trainers from University of
Nottingham.
The session will cover tips on how to meet and greet, explain
the background to China's gift giving culture, the importance of
exchanging business cards, dining out, social etiquette, key
language phrases and maintaining good business relations with
colleagues in China, as well as other cultural tips.
Suzannah Hutton, UKTI's language and culture adviser
said:
"There are more native speakers of Chinese than any other
language and it is estimated that by 2020, Chinese will be the
major language on the internet.
"As exports to China continue to grow rapidly, there are so many
opportunities out there. Investing time to find about social
etiquette and some key phrases will put companies in a great
position when it comes to dealing with potential Chinese
clients."
Costs for companies not participating in the Passport to Export
or Gateway to Global Growth schemes is £30 per delegate
