A Shropshire-based will-writer has warned that the current BBC
series, Can't Take It With You, highlights the alarming problems
which can arise within families if wills are not tackled very
carefully.
Terry Le Long, who runs Nathon Legal Services Shropshire Ltd
(NLS Shropshire), is regional chairman of the Society of Will
Writers (SWW), the leading professional body for the will writing
industry with more than 2,000 members across the UK.
He says the issues highlighted by the TV programme's presenter,
Sir Gerry Robinson, as he looks at the problems encountered by
families trying to ensure their last wishes are properly honoured,
are increasingly commonplace.
"A major source of problems with wills, as the programme
highlights, is the scenario where people re-marry, something which
is happening more and more. Will your children be disinherited if
your spouse remarries after your death? This is one of the most
common concerns I face on a regular basis.
"I think this is an excellent series which is doing a very good
job at demonstrating what a complex issue will-writing can be and
why it is vital to have the work carried out by professional
will-writers who deal with these issues every day of their working
lives.
"I have come across some very sad cases where people have
carried out simple DIY wills only for someone to find out, when it
was too late, that the will didn't go anywhere near serving its
purpose.
"I would strongly urge anyone to be very careful that their
wishes are protected by a properly crafted last will and
testament," said Terry.
