866 miles, 500,000 wheel rotations and 44 Full English
breakfasts later, St. Modwen's intrepid cycle team has successfully
completed its Lands End to John O'Groats charity cycle ride.
Completed in 54.66 hours over 10 days, averaging 15.86 mph, the
peloton team comprising regional director Mike Herbert, senior
development surveyor Mike Murray and development surveyors Andrew
Cox and Jonathan Green, has already raised in excess of
£25,000 for the challenge's four nominated charities - The
Donna Louise Children's Hospice Trust; Breast Cancer Campaign; the
British Heart Foundation; and the James Whale Fund for Kidney
Cancer.
Regional director Mike Herbert commented: "We are
delighted to have successfully completed the cycle challenge which
we set ourselves at the beginning of the year. Having spent
months intensively training to ensure we had the stamina to
successfully complete the route, we were thrilled to reach John
O'Groats some ten hours ahead of schedule. The route wasn't
without its challenges as we tackled steep ascents, inclement
weather and perilous caravans but we persevered as a team and, with
the help of over 125 energy bars and thoughts of our many
supporters behind us, we were delighted to cross the finish line
injury free!
"The cycle challenge was originally conceived out of our desire
to raise money for local and national charities which we each feel
passionate about. We are thrilled to have already raised over
£25,000 and, with donations still coming in, we hope to
further swell that figure and make a real difference to the
charities which we were so proud to represent on this once in a
lifetime challenge. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has
donated so far and to Tom Hart and Jason Tait who gave up their
time to drive our support vehicle."
Donations can still be made to the St. Modwen team with the
total money raised due to be split between the four chosen
charities later this year:
The Donna Louise Children's Hospice Trust runs a comprehensive
children's hospice service within Staffordshire and South Cheshire,
providing respite and end of life care for children with life
threatening conditions.
Breast Cancer Campaign's mission is to beat breast cancer by
funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast
cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment,
prevention and cure.
The British Heart Foundation envisages a world where people do
not die prematurely from heart disease, and looks to achieve this
through pioneering research, vital prevention activity and ensuring
quality care and support for everyone living with heart
disease.
The James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer is the UK's leading
specialist kidney cancer charity. It seeks to help reduce the harm
caused by kidney cancer by increasing knowledge and awareness,
providing patient information and by supporting research into the
causes, prevention and treatment of the disease.
