A Birmingham man who applied for no less than 85 jobs is finally
celebrating the beginning of an exciting new career - in
recruitment!
Paul Evans, from Kings Heath, spent eight months looking for
work, filling in numerous unsuccessful job applications along the
way after being made redundant from the television industry.
But now he's secured a position as a recruitment consultant for
city-based Network Recruitment Partnership in Edgbaston where he's
thriving, helping people in the same position he once found
himself.
Paul puts his success down to persistence and the support he
received from Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG) who deliver
the £115m Working Neighbourhoods Fund initiative, a
partnership between Be Birmingham, Jobcentre Plus, Birmingham City
Council, and the LSC.
Hearing about the project, he contacted PPDG'S Caroline
Cartwright. She said: "Often people don't realise just what they're
good at. In Paul's case he has a number of transferable skills such
as enthusiasm, motivation and the right attitude. I knew Network
Recruitment had a vacancy and told Paul he should go for it."
Three interviews later, including a presentation, he was offered
the job and hasn't looked back.
"You quickly lose confidence when faced with redundancy," said
Paul. "Fortunately, I met Caroline who gave me sound advice and
boosted my esteem when I needed it most. It's good to know that
there is help available in these difficult times and my advice is
to keep persevering."
The employer was so impressed with Paul's motivation they
offered him the job soon after his interview and, after returning
to work, he is already looking at opportunities to develop his new
career further.
Ken Wood is Paul's director and also a city councillor for the
Longbridge area. He said: "Employers are invariably on the look-out
for people who can demonstrate all the right attributes and our
industry is no different. Paul is simply applying the skills and
experience he learned with the media in a different way but with
good effect and it was great to be able to contribute to the
success Pertemps People Development Group is having in support of
long term job-seekers."
Support available for job seekers through WNF includes:
