A leading Birmingham-based medical research and manufacturing
company, The Binding Site, has acquired a long leasehold interest
from Calthorpe Estates for the 107k sq.ft. award-winning,
sustainable office development on Calthorpe Road in Edgbaston.
The Binding Site employs over 400 staff who will move from the
company's existing premises in Kings Heath as soon as fitting-out
has been completed.
The company, which is a Birmingham University Medical School
spin-out organisation formed in the early 1980's by Professor Jo
Bradwell and colleagues, specialises in manufacturing blood tests
for the detection of cancers and other serious disorders.
Speaking on behalf of the Calthorpe Estates team, Chief
Executive Richard Allen said ''We are delighted that The Binding
Site Corporation has selected one of the UK's most attractive and
sustainable new office buildings, located on The Calthorpe Estate,
Edgbaston, for its global headquarters.
To have the building occupied by a world-leading medical
technologies corporation is not only a testament to the appeal of
Calthorpe Estate's broadly based and evolving business and
residential community, but it is another step along the path of
enhancing the standing of Birmingham as a whole on the world's
economic platform.
We warmly welcome the management and staff of this dynamic,
thriving company and look forward to a strengthening, long-term
relationship with them'.
Professor Jo Bradwell, Chairman for Binding Site, said: "The
development at 5 Calthorpe Road is a fantastic landmark in the city
and we are proud to be able to put our name on it. The company
started in the Medical School in Edgbaston and it seems fitting
that after 27 years of growth we are located near to our roots.
The Binding Site has just been awarded the Queen's Award for
Enterprise 2010 (International Trade) so it is ideal that we will
be able to receive the award in our fabulous new premises and we
are looking forward to continuing our growth on The Calthorpe
Estate."
The award winning six-storey BREEAM 'Excellent' property
developed by Calthorpe Estates has lead the way for sustainable
office development with a host of eco-friendly features including a
rainwater harvesting system and high levels of thermal insulation,
which have contributed to the achievement of an EPC rating 'B' and
100% of SOGE targets (Sustainable Operations on the Government
Estate).
