Litton Properties has signed a partnership agreement with Tesco
to develop proposals for a new superstore on derelict land in
Hoyland - the former site of the Hoyland Market Street Primary
School - approximately three miles south of Barnsley. The scheme,
which is in excess of £10m, would be a significant investment
for the area.
Tesco has confirmed that the new 20,000 sq ft store would employ
up to 140 staff, with a commitment to recruit locally. The
development would also create around 100 temporary construction
jobs.
The store would provide the area with high quality food and a
wide range of non-food goods; it would also encourage the residents
of Hoyland to shop locally and is anticipated to reduce the need to
drive to the shops. The proposals include Tesco bringing their
popular eco-store format to the area for the first time, using
state-of-the-art technologies to help reduce the store's carbon
footprint.
Commenting on the proposed development, Matthew Magee, corporate
affairs manager at Tesco said: "We are delighted about proposing
the first Tesco eco store for Hoyland, which will offer a large
range of high quality products at the great value we're known for.
"We are looking to consult in the next couple of months where we
would be very keen to hear what people think about our proposals
and what they would like to see in the proposed store."
The announcement follows Litton Properties' successful bid for
the Market Street site, which has been purchased from Barnsley
Council. As Mark Rothery, Litton Properties' development director
explains: "We are delighted to announce our partnership with the
UK's leading supermarket retailer. Over the next few months we will
be working hard with Tesco to deliver a scheme which meets the
highest design standards and we look forward to presenting initial
proposals to local residents in the near future."
A public exhibition is planned for New Year that will allow
local residents to see the proposal and to comment on the
scheme.
