Retailers across Shropshire have been warned to be on their
guard against seasonal shoplifters over Christmas and New Year.
The warning comes from Dave Williams, from Henshalls Insurance
Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury.
"With the shops getting busier and busier in the run-up to the
big day, retailers face an increased threat, particularly from
shoplifters.
"And many people may not realise, but theft by shoplifters is
not covered by insurance, so it's in their own interest for
retailers to protect themselves."
Dave said at this time of year, retailers have higher levels of
stock, increased cash intake and often new staff that have been
hired to meet the Christmas rush.
"Criminals know that businesses are at their most vulnerable
over the holidays, but by taking a few simple precautions, shops
and stores can reduce their risks."
He said the first step was to make sure staff were aware of the
increased threat over the festive season, and ask them to be extra
vigilant.
"And if you employ seasonal staff, make sure they are properly
vetted and only hire them from a trusted source.
"You should also check your security alarms are in working
order, and that someone is always contactable if there is ever a
crisis.
"Your insurance policy may also include conditions covering the
alarm or the overall security of your premises, so it's vital that
you familiarise yourself with your policy details as your cover may
be affected if you don't comply.
"Retailers must also keep a close and regular check on stock
levels and business assets, and review their insurance cover to
ensure they are properly protected if anything should happen.
"Every retailer hopes for a busy festive season, particularly
given the difficult economic climate, but it's vital that they take
steps to protect themselves too."
