Heavy snowfall in Shropshire could lead to a massive surge in
insurance claims if it causes severe damage to properties.
But property owners have been warned that insurers could refuse
to pay out if they have not taken sensible precautions.
Dave Williams, from Henshalls in Newport and Shrewsbury, said
the onset of tough winter conditions was always a concern for many
people.
"With the first cold weather warning of the season already upon
us, and snow predicted, it's vital that property owners are well
prepared.
"Every winter, a significant number of claims are always linked
to the damage caused by the weight of snow that builds up on a flat
or low pitched roof, so it's important to try to avoid this
situation.
"If you have a flat or low pitched roof, snow can't easily slide
from it, so it will be particularly vulnerable to snow damage. You
should also check any outbuildings as they may not be constructed
as robustly as other buildings and so may buckle under the extra
weight."
Dave said property owners must be aware of the risks, and take
action where possible to prevent any major damage.
"Try to heat the space under the roof to melt the snow, using
portable heaters if your insurer allows this, or if the building is
already heated, open a loft hatch to allow the heat to
circulate.
"If the building is low, try to rake the snow off the roof at
regular intervals before it gets too deep - but take care not to
stand where the snow might fall as you could find yourself in
danger.
"Even if you can't see just how much snow is accumulating on the
roof, unusual creaking sounds in the roof space are a sign that the
roof is under pressure, so listen carefully for any noises you
don't recognise.
"Remember if you fail to take sensible precautions, your insurer
may decide that they won't pay out. So think carefully about your
property and identify any potential risk areas in advance before
the snow arrives, then you'll be well prepared for anything the
weather brings."
