children in India
Schoolwear supplier Price & Buckland is helping to bring a
new local language book to school children in India as part of its
ongoing support of educational charity Room to Read.
The new, culturally relevant book, Chintu Ki Mungfuli (Chintu's
Peanuts), has been written by a local author and will be printed
thanks to sponsorship from Price & Buckland. Up to 10,000
copies will then be circulated in some of India's poorest
communities by Room to Read, a charity focused on building schools,
libraries and educational infrastructure throughout the developing
world.
Anna McFarland, Room to Read's development manager commented:
"Youngsters in many regions of the developing world don't have
access to children's books in their own language. This is mainly
due to the fact that it's simply not profitable for publishers to
print children's books because local families cannot afford to buy
them.
"It's through the support of companies such as Price &
Buckland that we're able to run our Local Language Publishing
scheme and help to spark the imagination of children, building both
a sense of curiosity and the desire to learn to read."
Price & Buckland has supported Room to Read for two years by
donating two pence from every uniform garment sold in the UK, and
has so far raised £32,000. Aside from author sponsorship, the
money has been used for a variety of other projects, including the
building of school libraries in both India and Vietnam.
"We work hard to ensure that the working conditions in our Asian
factories are as good as possible," added Nick Buckland, joint
managing director of Price & Buckland. "However, there's still
much to be done in the surrounding communities where children are
missing out on basic things such as books, which many of us take
for granted.
"We take a lot of pride in our partnership with Room to Read and
it's great to know that we're helping young people in other parts
of the world to get the best possible start in life."
