Local HR expert issues Festive warning to businesses

A local HR consultancy is warning businesses across the region to issue clear reminders to staff of the potential consequences of unprofessional conduct as the Christmas party season gets underway.

Shropshire-based Triangle HR is urging employers to make sure that rules regarding anti-social behaviour are as unambiguous as possible and that employees are fully aware of the impact of such behaviour, which could include formal warnings or even employment tribunals.

Founder and Director of Triangle HR, Justine Vaughan, explained: "Whether it's illicit romantic liaisons between staff or insults being thrown at the boss, the first three weeks of December can result in more headaches for employers, and more cases of employment tribunals and employee dismissals, than at any other time of the year.

"In the majority of cases, employees are extremely well-behaved and fully respect the fact that the Christmas party is an extension of the office, but occasions can arise where behaviour gets out of hand, particularly where alcohol is involved.   It can also be the case that issues arise after the celebrations are over, with photos being posted on social network sites such as Facebook, which can be wholly inappropriate and can result in disciplinary action having to be taken by the employer.

"Businesses all too often approach the annual party with a relaxed attitude and don't make it clear to their team what is expected of them in terms of behaviour, and that can be dangerous. Business owners need to make it clear that while they want staff to have a good time and enjoy themselves, there are still certain expectations required of them and that inappropriate behaviour won't be tolerated. By setting some simple rules, they can be sure that everyone can have a good time," Justine concluded.

Triangle HR offers a full consultancy service covering every area of employment and provides a professional, cost-effective solution for businesses across the region.
